color, font, size and style of your wedding invitations might seem like
cake compared to composing the actual text, especially if you come from
a blended family. Follow the
suggestions below for the scenario closest to yours. For traditional invitations,
the best way to start is to follow the formula below. Basic
formula: Invitational

Aside from making sure you have included all the important information
for getting your guests to your wedding – and spelled everything
correctly, it’s just as important that no one’s feelings will
be hurt. When in doubt, check with all parties, and have the necessary
conversations before the invitations are printed. It’s better to
fall short on tradition than on someone’s feelings. Other general
rules to keep in mind:
- Be
consistent.
- If
you are using Mr. and Mrs. for one set of parents, use it for everyone.
- If
you are spelling out the date, spell out all numbers. The year is
not essential to include. Times are written in lowercase.
- If
you are using the British spelling of honour, use favour for the
reply card.
- Check
titles. Titles like junior should be spelled out and preceded
by a comma. However, long names or less formal invitations can use a
“Jr.” A “II” doesn’t not need a comma,
but one can be used.
- Know
the religious differences. Weddings outside a place of worship
commonly use “request the pleasure of your company.” Weddings
in a religious setting can read “request the honor of your presence.”
Also, many religious have different nuances, such as Jewish Weddings
use the word “and” to join the bride and groom’s names
instead of “to.” Check with your officiant to see if there
is a religious style you want to follow.
- Represent.
Even if the wording follows the proper format, it might not convey the
style of your wedding. Be sure to choose words that describe the formality
or spirit of your wedding day.
