HOME · MOUNTAINCOW MONTHLY NEWSLETTER (SEPTEMBER 2005)

As we put away our sandals and linen shirts until next year, we can gear up for all this fall has to offer. Thanks to the lunar calendar, the Jewish holidays are late this year, giving us plenty of time to send out new year’s greetings. Bet you didn’t know Grandparent’s day is Sunday, September 11th! No sweat, we have a project you can have in the postbox before the mailman comes. Platinum users can catch up on summer blockbusters with a movie night party. Planning a wedding? Make our easy and elegant save the date cards.

A sweet greet
The Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah celebrates the beginning of the Hebrew calendar. Just as we send season’s greetings and new year’s wishes in December, it’s customary to send cards during the Jewish holidays in the fall.

Our PrintingPress project starts with an image of a honey pot and apples on the front of a white folded card. “L’Shanah Tovah,” written underneath in Meegles from Fonts & Graphics 3, means Happy New Year in Hebrew. The apple and honey symbolize a sweet start to the new year. The inside of the card can hold a personal message, also written in Meegles, with a single apple image. The folded card is sent in a Deep Red A7 envelope.

In our Platinum project using Café au Lait stationery, Hebrew words are nestled in an ornate Star of David. The Hebrew, written in Malkah from Fonts & Graphics 2 , says “L’Shanah Tovah”, also written in transliteration below the star in Noodles from Fonts & Graphics 3. The personal note inside is also written in Noodles with a small image of the star from the front

If you want to customize your Hebrew greeting, review our tech tip for hints on how to type the right Hebrew characters.

Don't forget the Grandparents!
Everyone’s been caught at a special occasion without the right card. Whether you’re walking out the door to a wedding, forgot a pal’s birthday or an anniversary crept up on you, don’t sweat it! You can easily make your own. That’s why we created a jump-start on a card for Grandparent’s Day. Just whip up a pretty card and leave the inside blank for the kids to write a personal message.

We imported an image of daffodils for the front of the PrintingPress project and wrote “Happy Grandparent’s Day” in Brina Strong, a child’s handwriting font from Fonts & Graphics 3. Paired with a Clover A7 envelope, it looks fresh from the garden.

For the Platinum project, we made a patchwork-quilt background image and used a text box to fill in the cut-out heart. We even added a stitched heart on the back of the card with a little message. Send using a Clover A7 envelope.

Lights, camera, action!

If summer kept you too busy to catch any of the big hits in the theatre, have a movie party in your living room. (Mountaincow highly recommends screening Hitch which shows Will Smith holding one of our invitations!)

Use a background image that looks like frames from a movie reel. Fill in each block with the movie night information. We used Noodles Strong from Fonts & Graphics 3 for a sophisticated red-carpet script. We also paired white and pink block letters with italic to imitate bold movie credits. Pair the card with a Magenta A6 envelope and go dig out your popcorn maker!

Save with style
Save the date cards are the first glimpse of the type of event you are planning. We’ve designed sophisticated announcements to match an elegant affair.

Using the new Blueberry Truffle stationery in A6, the PrintingPress project uses the swirling Alyssa font from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings. All the text is right-aligned except for the blue “Invitation to follow” at the bottom of the card. The first initial of the bride’s and groom’s names are made much larger (72 points) than the rest of the letters (56 points). We decreased the line spacing to nestle the names and ampersand together. To adjust the line spacing, choose Format Paragraph from the Stationery menu and set line spacing to Exactly. Then choose a point size for the space that is less than the point size of the letter so it’s forced to overlap the line above it.

For the Platinum project, the text is fully justified in various text boxes and layered on a green background. We used Benjamin Caps from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings and made the couple’s name larger, and made the wedding date even larger and opaque white to stand out from the green background and the other black text. The card is paired with a Chocolate A6 envelope for a bold, modern combination.

Typing in Hebrew
You can easily use Hebrew in your invitations without having to load the Hebrew version of Windows and type from right-to-left. There are a number of Hebrew fonts available on the Internet, and we offer the Malkah font designed to match the English font Benjamin.

Malkah works like a regular font, so you type the letters from left to right and choose the letters that correspond with the matching letter in the alef-bet. An easy way to do this is to type in an English font all the letters:

abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ

and then select it and change the font to Malkah. You can then select the individual Hebrew letters you need and copy and paste them in the correct right-to-left order

You will notice that alef = a, bet = b, etc... To see the entire character set you can click the Windows Start menu and choose All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Character Map and select the font to be Malkah.
