Tip of the Month

Set a place for me
If you’re hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year, our menus and place cards are just the thing to dress up your holiday table. If you’re hosting a large affair, the place cards help you arrange your guests with grace and style. If you’re hosting a potluck gathering, our menu cards make sure everyone gets credit for their skills in the kitchen.

For an elegant place setting, try our PrintingPress design. We started with a brown silhouette of an acorn at the top of an Ivory 4.75 x 6.75 inch custom cut card. We added the courses in brown using the Alyssa font from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings. We listed the dishes using the Benjamin Caps font from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings. We used a double-stick tape gun to mount the menu to a Metallic Vintage A7 card. We created matching Ivory place cards with the name written in brown using the Alyssa font.

Our PrintingPress Platinum design features fall color tones and Ivory stationery. First we added a floating image of red, yellow, orange and brown dahlias to the left side of an A7 card. Then we listed the courses of the meal in brown using the Alyssa Afternoon font from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings. We used floating text boxes to add the dishes in brown using the Benjamin Caps font from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings. We added expanded horizontal and vertical spacing for an airy look. We added the same flowers along the bottom of the Ivory place card beneath the guest’s name.

Our PrintingPress Extreme 5.0 design is traditional with a splash of fun. To continue the fall theme, we added a bunch of harvest corn to the top of the Ecru A7 card. We added the text in the same rich red as the leftmost ear of corn using the Times New Roman font with the Small Caps text style. Next, we increased the horizontal and vertical spacing for an airy look. We added a custom stationery border with a dotted outline and a solid inner pen. We added the corn to the Ecru place cards on the left side of the guest’s name.

Take it to the Extreme

Present perfect
We know; the official holiday shopping season doesn’t begin until after Thanksgiving. We’re planning ahead to make sure that every base is covered for you during the hectic holiday season. Once you’ve checked off everyone on your list, wrapping each package with personalized gift wrap will make sure the recipient knows who to thank.

We used PrintingPress Extreme’s Repeated Text tool to add holiday greetings across the background of three different holiday designs:  animal print stockings, ornaments and snowflakes. To customize the text, click on the Edit Text button on the Background palette in the Design palette group. For more tips on using the Repeated Text feature, see the Extreme Tip from the November 2008 issue.

Can't print big sheets yourself? We have lots of new holiday styles of Personalized Gift Wrap.

Last-Minute Lovely

Seasonal salutations
It’s not quite last-minute to start planning your holiday cards in October, but we want to make sure that even if you do leave it to the last minute, your holiday greetings will be gorgeous. This year’s designs are fun and colorful and, best of all, easy to print.

Our PrintingPress design features a White A7 folded note card with room for a handwritten note inside. On the front of the card, a fun and flirty pink leopard tree really stands out in a grove of evergreens. We topped the tree with a green star and added the words “merry everything” beneath the trees in green using the Girls are Weird font from the Easy Invitations Bonus Content CD. You can change the text to say anything that you like, and customize the message on the inside of the card as well. We lined the Clover envelopes in Magenta and added wild holiday (magenta & green) Personalized StationeryStamps.

If you want to take a break from traditional holiday hues, try our PrintingPress Platinum design. We started by adding a solid green background image to a White A7 card. We added floating images of three holiday stockings, each in a different animal print. We added the words “Wishing you a WILD holiday season” in white using the Girls are Weird font from the Easy Invitations Bonus Content CD beneath the stockings. We changed the world “WILD” to magenta to make it really pop. We lined the Blush envelopes in animal print (zebra), but you could also use animal print (leopard) or animal print (giraffe) – whichever is your favorite. The finishing touch:  stockings Personalized StationeryStamps.

If you have a favorite family photo that you would like to share this holiday season, try our PrintingPress Extreme 5.0 design. We started by adding a custom background to a White A7 card and filling the background in light blue. Next we added a red custom border with the border shape set to Line (Bottom). We set the card’s vertical alignment to Align Text Bottom and then added the greetings text in white using the Times New Roman font in all lowercase letters. We added a white inner pen to the border, and set the inner pen’s line type to Dotted (overlapping fill). We added a bit of spacing to allow the meeting of the red and blue to show between the dots. Next, we added several peace sign ornaments as floating images hanging from the top of the card. We enabled the Make white transparent setting for all of the images so that they can overlap each other and allow the blue background to show through. Finally, we added a ribbon to hold the photo “ornament.” We turned on the Convert to Grayscale setting, added a 2 point red custom border to the photo and set the border shape to Oval. For tips on cropping a standard rectangular photo to a circle, see this month’s Extreme Tip. We used our printer’s borderless printing feature to print the card onto our Natural Cotton stationery, which is a thicker, textured card stock that is wonderful for photos and lets your ink jet colors really shine. We lined the Deep Red envelopes in Powder Blue and added holiday peace (red & blue) Personalized StationeryStamps.

Special Occasion in a Snap

Winter fete
If you want to gather family and friends together this holiday season, our festive new invitation designs will help you pull together a great party in a snap. Also, with everyone’s busy holiday schedules, getting your invitations out early will help ensure lots of buzz and a full crowd.

Our PrintingPress design is full of holiday merriment. We wrote the words “ho! ho! ho!” across the top of a White 4.75 x 6.75 inch custom cut card using the Times New Roman font. We replaced the “o” in the last “ho!” with an image of a candy cane heart in a green gumdrop. We added the rest of the invitation text in red and black using the Times New Roman font. We used a double-stick tape gun to adhere the invitation to a Deep Red A7 card. We lined the Deep Red envelopes in Clover and added ho! ho! ho! StationeryStamps to start the party outside of the envelope.

For a sparkling evening, try our PrintingPress Platinum design featuring our Metallic stationery. Since Metallic stationery is not compatible with most ink jet printers, we used our color laser printer for this project. If you do not have access to a laser printer, you can use Matte stationery. We started by adding a martini glass filled with ornaments as a floating image on the left side of a Metallic White 4.75 x 6.75 inch custom cut card. We added the “Please join us…” text in red using the Noodles font from Fonts & Graphics 3 to the right of the cocktail. Next we used floating text boxes to add the rest of the invitation text in black using the Benjamin Caps font from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings. We increased the horizontal and vertical spacing on the text boxes for an airy look. We added a single ornament as a floating image in the bottom right corner of the invitation. Next, we used a double-stick tape gun to mount the invitation to a Metallic Aqua A7 card. We lined the Metallic Aqua envelopes in Metallic Deep Red for a bold splash of color. We added ornaments Personalized StationeryStamps to complete the ensemble.

If you’re planning a wild evening, try our PrintingPress Extreme 5.0 design. We started by adding a 2 inch custom border to a White A7 card. We filled the border with our new animal print (dalmation) pattern and set the border shape to Line (Bottom). Next, we added a floating image of a slim magenta belt clasped across the center of the spotted border. Next we added the invitation text in magenta and grey using the Times New Roman font with the Small Caps text style. We also added the Engrave text style to make the text really jump off the page as if it were engraved into the card. Since the dalmation print runs all the way to the edge of the card, we used our printer’s borderless printing feature. We lined the Magenta envelopes in Pewter for a polished look.

Extreme Tip

A perfect crop
Many of our newsletter designs feature circular photographs, but unless you’ve got a magical circular camera, your photos are rectangular just like ours. Not to worry; once you’ve added your photo to a newsletter design, PrintingPress Extreme 5.0 makes it easy to shape that rectangle into a perfect circle. In the example below, we’ve replaced the placeholder image in the newsletter project with our family photo. You can see that the rectangular photograph changes the circle ornament into an oval. In addition, there are a lot of background items in the photo (sky, rock, bag) that we just don’t need.

We begin by using the Crop controls in the Size palette in the Design palette group to crop out the unwanted parts of the photograph. There are four Crop controls: Crop Top %, Crop Bottom %, Crop Left % and Crop Right %. The crop percentage refers to the percentage of the total height or width of the photograph that should be cropped. The Crop Top % setting crops from the top edge of the photograph. If you enter 10 into the Crop Top % field, then photograph will be cropped from the top edge of the photograph by 10% of the total image height.

Size Palette

Click in each field and use the wheel on your mouse button to play with the setting and adjust your photograph. As you adjust the Crop settings, the new cropped image dimensions will be displayed in the Size palette’s Height and Width fields. Since we are trying to crop the photograph to a circle, keep increasing the Crop % values, removing unwanted parts of the photograph, until the Height and Width are roughly equal. In our example, we cropped the photograph until it the Height and Width were roughly equal:  1.84 x 1.82 inches.

Then we resized the photograph to make it the original size of the placeholder image (approximately 2.3 x 2.3 inches) and placed it just below the ribbon ornament hanger. Below you can see the final cropped and resized photograph.
