Tip of the Month

A perfect setting
Whether you have a small intimate gathering for Thanksgiving or invite the whole neighborhood, it can be really fun to dress up the table with menus and place cards. The menus allow you to give credit to anyone who worked hard on preparing the meal, and the place cards allow you to control who sits next to cranky Uncle Elbert.

Our PrintingPress design features a bounty of harvest vegetables (or is a squash technically a fruit?) atop a Natural Cotton 3.75 x 7.25 inch custom cut card (found in our Textured stationery section). We added the menu text in brown using the Alyssa Afternoon and Benjamin Caps fonts from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings. We used a double-stick tape gun to mount the card to a Mandarin Orange menu card. The Natural Cotton place card has the guest’s name in brown using the Alyssa Afternoon font.

For a bright, modern table, try our PrintingPress Platinum design. We added a background of fall leaves to a White A7 card. Since the leaves run all the way to the edge of the card, we used our printer’s borderless printing feature. We added the menu text in black using all lowercase letters in the Arial font for a simple, clean look. We created our place card as a flat card rather than a folded card so that the leaf background could flow across the fold onto the back of the card. We used the Arial font again and also used the borderless printing feature again, telling the printer that the place card was a 3.5 x 5 inch card.

We continue the fall color scheme with our PrintingPress Extreme 4.0 design. We added an image of an autumn tree to the top of an Ecru 3.75 x 7.25 inch custom cut card. Next we added a floating text box with the text “· Happy Thanksgiving 2008 ·” and set the text box’s Text Shape to Semicircle. We placed the text box above the tree so that the words arc above the branches. We added the menu text in brown using the Benjamin font from Fonts & Graphics 2. We used a double-stick tape gun to mount the card to a Deep Red menu card. We added the same tree to the Ecru place card and set the guest name text box’s Text Shape to Bend Up.

To the Extreme

Treat yourself
Reward yourself for handing out candy all night by making some beautiful new personalized note cards. While you’re at it, why not make some as a holiday gift too? It’s an easy way to create a beautiful, elegant and personal gift.

Our PrintingPress Extreme 4.0 design features Crocus A2 folded stationery. We added a single initial to a floating text box using the Alyssa font from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings. We set the size of the initial to 120 and added a twilight background to the text box. Next we set the text color to white so that the initial blocks out the background of the text box and allows the Ecru card to show through. Finally we added a custom border with a white 2 point inner pen and a 23 point twilight outer pen with the Line Style set to Bumps. We set the custom border’s shape to Oval and then set the text box’s size to 2.2 inches square and centered the text box onto the front of the card. We lined the Twilight envelopes in Ecru and added flourish initial (periwinkle) Personalized StationeryStamps using Ecru sheets in the Small size.

Last-Minute Lovely

A visit from the stork
We know how hard it is to find time to take a shower when you have a newborn, much less time to create birth announcements. That’s why we’ve created a batch of new precious designs for you to print in a flash. All of our designs are available in colors for a boy or a girl, and we always include a gender neutral green as well.

A sweet rocking horse sits atop our PrintingPress design. We added the horse to the top of a White 3 x 4.5 inch custom cut card. For a girlie girl, we gave the horse pink accessories. We added the baby’s stats in all lowercase using the Times New Roman font in pink. We used a double-stick tape gun to mount the announcement to a Pink Lemonade 4-bar Scalloped card. Pair with a Pink Lemonade 4-bar envelope. For added cuteness, use rocking horse (pink) StationeryStamps (shown in the Small size).

For a classic look, try our PrintingPress Platinum design. We created a blue border with rounded edges and an inset dashed line to make it look as if it were stitched onto the White 4-bar card. We added the baby’s monogram in the same blue to the top of the card. We used the advanced monogram settings to create the monogram using the Benjamin Caps font from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings. We added all the baby’s info in blue using the Benjamin Caps font beneath the monogram. Since the design runs all the way to the edge of the card, we used our printer’s borderless printing feature. Send in a Powder Blue envelope with stitched monogram (blue) Personalized StationeryStamps.

Our PrintingPress Extreme 4.0 design lets you show off your baby’s gorgeous face amid a field of polka dots. We used the shape tool to create seven 1.125 inch circles in a variety of colors and spaced them evenly in two rows across the top of the card. We used a variety of pastel shades, but since we used shapes you can change it to use any color scheme that you like. We added a photo of the baby and cropped it to make it square, then set the height to 1.125" inches to make it the same size as the circles. We converted the photo to grayscale so that it wouldn’t compete with the colors of the circles. Next we added a custom border to the photo and set the border’s Shape to Oval. Nestled among the circles, he’s cute as can be. We set the card’s vertical alignment to Bottom and added the baby’s name using the Noodles font from Fonts & Graphics 3. We added the baby’s stats using the Times New Roman font and then added the parents’ names using the Noodles font. You can use any envelope color that you like, but ours uses an Avocado 4-bar envelope lined in Powder Blue. We added Custom Image StationeryStamps in the Small size with the baby’s photo and three other circles. For tips on adding your own photo to one of our newsletter projects, see this month’s Extreme Tip.

Special Occasion in a Snap

Mark your calendar
When you get engaged, you feel surrounded by a bubble of happiness that just won’t quit. We don’t want the worries of planning the wedding to pop that bubble, so we’ve taken away one worry for you by designing fabulous new save the date cards. Send them out to your important guests 6-12 months in advance to make sure they reserve the date and then you can rest easy and plan at your leisure.

For an elegant look, try our PrintingPress design. We added a brown medallion to the top of a 4 x 5.25 inch custom cut Metallic Vanilla card. We added the wedding details in brown using the Benjamin Caps font and added the bride and groom’s names using the Alyssa Afternoon font, both from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings. Since we used metallic stock, we printed the card using our color laser printer. We used a double-stick tape gun to mount the card to a Metallic Chocolate A2 card. Send in a Metallic Chocolate A2 envelope lined in Metallic Vanilla. For an extra touch of elegance, we added medallion (brown) StationeryStamps in the Small size using Ecru sheets.

Feeling floral? Try our PrintingPress Platinum design featuring our Crocus stationery. We added a background image with a field of flowers to the Ecru A7 card. We used floating text boxes to add the words “Save the date” using the Alyssa font from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings to the top of the card. We set the point size of the text boxes to 120 and set the color for the words “Save” and “Date” to the darker blue used in the floral background. We set the text color for the word “the” to match the lighter blue. We added the wedding information in the darker blue using the Benjamin Caps font from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings. We added an ampersand in the lighter blue using the Alyssa font in a floating text box and floated it behind the bride and groom’s names. Finally we added the words “Invitation to follow” in the darker blue in a floating text box at the bottom of the card. Since the flowers run all the way to the edge of the card, we used our printer’s borderless printing feature. We lined the Twilight A7 envelope in Midnight and added flower garden (periwinkle) Personalized StationeryStamps.

Our PrintingPress Extreme 4.0 design features a pattern using the brown medallions. We used the shape tool to add a 2 inch tall band of the pattern to the bottom of an Ivory A7 card. We added a custom border with the border’s shape set to Line (Top) and added a double line border. For tips on creating double line borders, review the Extreme Tip from the January 2006 issue. We added the wedding info in brown using the Alyssa Afternoon font from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings. We added the bride and groom’s names using the Times New Roman font with the Small Caps advanced text style. Pair with Chocolate A7 envelopes lined in Ivory and send using medallion (brown) StationeryStamps using Ivory sheets.

Extreme Tip

Picture perfect
PrintingPress Extreme 4.0 makes it extremely easy to add photos to your holiday cards, birth announcements and invitations. We love creating projects that feature photos, but how do you add your own photo once you’ve downloaded the project? It’s easy:

  1. First you’ll need to download and import the newsletter project. Make sure to save the project file to your hard disk first, and then choose Import Project in the File menu in PrintingPress.

  2. We put a placeholder image in the project that you will want to replace with your own image. Double-click on the placeholder image to edit it.

Placeholder Image

  1. Click on the Change image button and then click on the Browse button in the Edit Image window and locate your photo on your hard disk. Select the desired image and click OK.

  2. You will see your photo in the Edit Image window. If the photo looks distorted at all, write down the height and width of the image and then click on the Reset button in the Original size (at screen resolution) section.

Rectangular Photo

  1. If the image is meant to be square, crop your image until the Cropped height and Cropped width in the Crop (before rotation) section are roughly equal.

  1. Adjust the size of the image using the controls in the Scale Image (before rotation) section to make it the original size of the placeholder image (1.125 inches in our example) and click on the OK button.
