Big Days Ahead & Writing Letters
July/August 2015

--------------------  Big Days Ahead  --------------------

Does your summer involve staring at the new bling on your ring finger? If you’re newly engaged, it’s a good idea to send out save the date cards once you’ve narrowed down a date to make sure your guests are available. We’ve created a trio of fresh designs using our Luxurious Natural Cotton stock to help you make sure your wedding date makes it onto all of your favorite peoples’ calendars.

Goth Love Save the Date Cards

If you share our love of skulls, our PrintingPress 7.0 Goth Love Save the Date Cards design is just for you. A sweet pair of hot pink skulls gaze lovingly into each other’s eyes (kind of forming a heart!) above the words “’til death do us part” on a Natural Cotton A7 card. We wrote the text in grey and hot pink using the Courier New font that is included with Windows. After printing, we used a corner punch to round the corners of the cards. We added a black version of the skulls on either side of the return address on the back of the Pewter envelopes, which we lined in Magenta.

Eye Chart Save the Date Cards

Our PrintingPress Platinum 7.0 Eye Chart Save the Date Cards are a little bit hipster and a LOT cute. We started by adding the letter “U” in black using the Arial Black font at the top of a Natural Cotton A7 card. Next, we wrote the rest of the Save the Date text in the main text area using slightly smaller point sizes on each line to mimic the style of an eye chart. We created a line at the bottom of the “chart” using underscore characters “_” with negative character spacing to remove any blank space between the characters. We added two pairs of nerd glasses beneath the chart and used the Colorize tool to make one strawberry pink. Next, we used floating text boxes to add the future bride- and groom-to-be’s names centered beneath their specs. We rounded the corners of the cards using a corner punch and lined the White envelopes in Blush for a pop of color.

Banner Save the Date Cards

Love bold designs? Our PrintingPress Extreme 7.0 Banner Save the Date Cards are perfect for you. We started by adding a black banner behind the main text area of a Natural Cotton A7 card. We wrote the words “SAVE” and “DATE” using the Times New Roman font that is included with Windows. We used a large point size and filled the text with a striped custom pattern. We added a black outline and white Offset Shadow (down) shadow to the text to make it really pop against the black banner. We used a floating text box to add the word “the” between “SAVE” and “DATE” using the Alyssa and Alyssa Black Tie fonts from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings and rotated it slightly. Next, we used floating text boxes to add the bride and groom’s names using the Jackson Sans font that is included with all PrintingPress software and used the custom border feature to add cinnamon double lines above and below the names. We used a third floating text box to join the pair with an ampersand written using the Palatino Linotype font that is included with Windows in the italic style. We added the rest of the information using the Jackson Sans font, the Alyssa and Alyssa Black Tie fonts, and the Georgia font that is included with Windows. We used floating text boxes to create a “stamp’ featuring the wedding date in the bottom left corner of the card. To see how we created the faux stamp, see this month’s Extreme Tip. After printing, we used a corner punch to round the corners of the cards. We lined the Cinnamon envelopes in Black for a bold look.

--------------------  Writing Letters   --------------------

Whether (like us) you’ve been writing letters to your children at camp (and have gone through all of your stationery already!) or you’re just in the mood for something new, we have fabulous new personalized stationery designs for you. Because we’ve been loving envelopes with the return address near the bottom of the back of the envelope, we used Reply envelopes in PrintingPress to allow us to print them using the one pass feature (with the flap open).

Between The Lines Stationery

Our PrintingPress 7.0 Between the Lines Stationery is classic and modern with the added bonus of lines to help keep you from writing in skewed lines sloping up and down the card. We wrote the first name in black using the Georgia font at the top of the Ecru A7 card and surrounded the name with curly braces “{ }” for fun. We created light grey lines using our favorite technique of typing underscore characters “_” with negative character spacing to remove any blank space between the characters. We increased the line spacing to spread out the lines. Have big handwriting? Delete a few lines and increase the line spacing. We paired the card with Cinnamon envelopes lined in Ecru.

Hello Sunshine Stationery

Love modern simplicity? Check out our PrintingPress Platinum 7.0 Hello Sunshine Stationery. We started by adding a few black cloud images as floating images at the top of a Natural Cotton A7 card. We used the Colorize feature to change all of the clouds to light grey. Next, we added a black raindrop image, made a zillion copies, and used the Colorize feature to make them light blue, light grey and dark grey. Finally, we used floating text boxes to write the words “hello sunshine” in white using the Georgia font inside the two larger clouds. After printing, the cards, we used a corner punch to round the corners. The return address sits within a sweet rain cloud on the back of the White envelopes, which are lined in Sky.

Air Mail Stationery

Our PrintingPress Extreme 7.0 Air Mail Stationery is perfect if you love a vintage vibe. We used the custom border feature to create a red and blue striped border around the edge of a Natural Cotton A7 card to bring to mind old school air mail stationery. We wrote the name in blue at the top of the card and filled it with the same textured pattern we used to create the striped custom pattern. Since the border runs to the edge of the card we used our printer’s borderless printing feature. We used floating text boxes to write the return address in the style of a postmark on the back of the White envelopes, which we lined in Midnight.

Extreme Tip

--------------------  Faux Circle Stamp  --------------------

PrintingPress Extreme 7.0’s text on a curve feature allows you to bend text to your will, and the Double Semicircle shape is one of our favorites, used in this month’s Banner Save the Date Cards and Air Mail Stationery. First, we started by adding the date in a floating text box. We used the same striped text that we used at the top of the card, and we gave the text box a black circular border with a white outline.

24 text box'

Next, we used another floating text box to add the month and year. We wrote the month in a slightly larger point size on the first line of the text box and the year on the second line of the text box. We set the text box’s Text Shape to Double Semicircle and placed it behind the date text box.

Added text box with shape set to Double Semicircle

The default horizontal text alignment for the Double Semicircle text shape is Justify Text, which evenly spaces all of the text to fill each of the semicircles. So all we have to do is change the horizontal text alignment to Align Text Center and then decrease the character spacing a bit to bring the letters closer together.

Align text to horizontal center

To complete the “stamp” look, we gave the text box a black background with the Background Shape set to Circle, changed the text color to white and added a 0.25 point white outline to the text as well.
