Tip of the Month

Sweet valentine
Here at Mountaincow, we are big fans of any holiday featuring chocolate, and Valentine’s Day is a big one! Whether you’re planning a quiet celebration for you and your sweetie, or you’re helping your child create cards for their entire class, our Valentine’s Day designs are a great place to start. All of our designs include addressed envelopes as well as inner envelopes (with just the name and no address) which are perfect for hand delivery.

Our PrintingPress design features a sweet cupcake topped with a candy heart on a White 3.125 x 4.625 inch custom cut card. We added the words “You’re sweet, Valentine” in red using the Girls are Weird font from the Easy Invitations Bonus Content CD below the cupcake. We used a double-stick tape gun to mount the card to a Deep Red Scalloped 4-bar card. Paired with a Magenta 4-bar envelope addressed using the Girls are Weird font, it’s too cute for words. If you’re mailing your Valentines, add our valentine cupcake StationeryStamps (shown in the Small size).

Our PrintingPress Platinum design really gets the message across! We started with White 4-bar cards and added a solid pink background image. Next we used three separate floating text boxes to add the words “Happy Valentines Day” in red and white using the Alyssa font from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings. We used another text box to add the words “from your fried Sophie” using the Girls are Weird font from the Easy Invitations Bonus Content CD. Since the pink background and text both bleed to the edge of the card, we used our printer’s borderless printing feature. We added coordinating Custom Image StationeryStamps in the Small size to the Deep Red 4-bar envelope to complete the look.

If your daughter is a groovy chick, she might like our PrintingPress Extreme 5.0 design. We created a 3.5 x 5 inch non-folded place card in PrintingPress Extreme with the guest’s name written in red using the Boys on Mopeds font so that the recipien'ts name will be printed on each Valentine. We created a shape object, set its Shape to Oval, and filled the shape in pink. Next we added a repeated text background to the shape to add the word “love” alternating in red and white using the Boys on Mopeds font from the Easy Invitations Bonus Content CD. We added a thick red border to the shape and we created additional shapes filled in the same red to transform the circle into a peace sign. We grouped the objects in order to resize and place the peace sign on the center of the card. For tips on grouping floating objects, see this month’s Extreme Tip. We set the Shape for the guest name text box to Bend Up to curve the name above the peace sign. We also set the Text Case for the guest name text box to lowercase for a whimsical look. Next we used a floating text box to add the words “sending you peace & love on valentine’s day” to the bottom of the card. We printed the design onto a White Scalloped 4-bar card and paired it with a Deep Red 4-bar envelope with a black peace sign above the return address. If you’re not delivering the card by hand, add our peace & love StationeryStamps in the Small size for even more peace & love.

Take it to the Extreme

Wrap it up
If you have any special treats to hand out on Valentine’s Day, why not make them even more special with personalized gift wrap? PrintingPress Extreme 5.0 makes it easy for you to add any message that you like. You can put a Valentine message suitable for any recipient such as “Happy Valentine’s Day from…”, or you can customize it for a special someone.

We started by creating a custom pattern of pink and red cupcakes atop a field of pink. We left space in between the rows of cupcakes for our Valentine message. Next we used PrintingPress Extreme 5.0’s repeated text feature to add the words “Happy Valentine’s day from Sophia” in red using the Girls are Weird font from the Easy Invitations Bonus Content CD between the rows of cupcakes. For tips on using the repeated text feature, check out the Extreme Tip from the November 2008 issue. We set the text shape to Wave to create a continuous bumpy line of text running along the gift wrap. We printed the 13 x 19 inch gift wrap paper using a wide format printer.  We also now offer gift wrap paper in 8.5x11” size for wrapping small items using standard size printers.

Mardi Gras
It’s a particularly cold winter so far, and we’ve been dreaming of heading south for a while. The hedonistic celebration of Mardi Gras sounds particularly tantalizing, but since we’re stuck in the snow we thought we’d bring Fat Tuesday to us! So whether you’re having friends over for cocktails before the big parade or you just want an excuse to party, try our colorful invitations featuring the traditional Mardi Gras colors of purple (justice), green (faith) and gold (power).

Our PrintingPress design features Mardi Gras masks at the top of a White 4.75 x 6.75 inch custom cut card. We added the words “It’s Mardi Gras!” in purple using the Noodles Strong font from Fonts & Graphics 3, and then added the rest of the invitation text in black using the Benjamin font from Fonts & Graphics 2. We added the words “Laissez les bon temps rouler!” (“Let the good times roll!”) in purple using the Noodles font at the bottom of the card. Next we used a double-stick tape gun to mount the white card to a Violet A7 card. We lined the Clover A7 envelope in Violet and added Custom Image StationeryStamps featuring the masks.

For a more elegant gathering, try our PrintingPress Platinum design. We added a border image featuring a strip of purple, green and gold harlequin. A row of green fleur de lis on a field of black runs across the bottom of the harlequin and the bottom of the card as well. We added the words “It’s Mardi Gras” in purple using the Alyssa Afternoon font from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings. We used a floating text box to add the invitation text using the Benjamin Caps font, also from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings, with expanded horizontal and vertical character spacing. Since the border runs all the way to the edge of the card, we used our printer’s borderless printing feature to print onto the White 4 x 6 inch custom cut card. We used a double-stick tape gun to adhere the invitation to a Black 4.25 x 6.25 inch custom cut card. We lined the Violet envelopes in Yellow for a majestic look.

Our PrintingPress Extreme 5.0 design really gets the message across with the words “mardi gras” written in 80 point text using the Arial Black font. We used alternating green, gold and purple for the letters for a festive look and set the Drop Shadow advanced text style. We added the text in floating text boxes and then rotated the text boxes and placed them just off the edge of the White 4-bar card so that they would be slightly cropped when printed. We added the invitation text in purple using the Arial font below the floating text boxes. Since the floating text boxes run off the edge of the card, we used our printer’s borderless printing feature. We lined the Clover 4-bar envelopes in Violet and added coordinating Custom Image StationeryStamps in the Small size to start the party outside the envelope.

Special Occasion in a Snap

Mark your calendar
If your plans for 2009 include planning a wedding, our save the date cards are a great way to help spread the news and make sure that everyone reserves the day for your big event. You can also include hotel information on a separate card to help out of town guests plan their trip. And with our fabulous designs, you can save the date with style.

Our PrintingPress design features a pair of seahorses kissing atop a White 3.25 x 4.75 inch custom cut card. We added the bride and groom’s names in brown using the Times New Roman font. We added the save the date info in avocado and then the words “invitation to follow” in brown at the bottom of the card.  We used a double-stick tape gun to mount the card to an Avocado 4-bar card. We lined the Chocolate 4-bar envelopes in Avocado and added coordinating Custom Image StationeryStamps in the Small size with the seahorses and the bride and groom’s names.

Our PrintingPress Platinum design is has a preppy, beach-club feel. We added a border image with aqua, orange and white stripes to the front of a White 4-bar folded note card. We used a floating text box to add the wedding date in orange using the Ryan font from Fonts & Graphics 3. We added the bride and groom’s names in orange using the Ryan font inside the card as well, with the rest of the text in black using the Times New Roman font. Since the border goes all the way to the edge of the card, we used our printer’s borderless printing feature. We lined the Mandarin Orange 4-bar envelopes in Aqua and added coordinating Custom Image StationeryStamps (shown in the Small size).

Our PrintingPress Extreme 5.0 design featuring a Mountaincow Pocket Folder is perfect for a destination wedding or if you will have a lot of guests coming in from out of town since the pocket gives you lots of room to provide hotel information. We started with an Ecru 4-bar card and used floating text boxes to add the bride and groom’s names in orange using the Alyssa Afternoon font from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings with the size set to 100 point. We placed the names at the edge of the card so that they would be slightly cropped when printed. We used a third text box to join the names with the word “and” in black using the Benjamin Caps font from Fonts & Graphics for Weddings. We added the rest of the text in the main text area of the card using the same fonts. Since the floating text boxes run off the edge of the card, we used our printer’s borderless printing feature. Next we used a double-stick tape gun to mount the card to a Mandarin Orange 3.75 x 5.25 inch custom cut card. We created a backing card and added a custom background filled with a new floral batik pattern and then printed it onto an Ecru A7 card using our printer’s borderless feature. We mounted the other two cards to the patterned card and then adhered the group to an Ecru A8 Landscape Pocket Folder (pointed flap). We added a single batik flower to the upper left corner of an Ecru A7 card and then added hotel information. You can put additional cards into the pocket if necessary to provide information for your guests. We used the Label stationery type to create 3.25 x 1.75 inch seals featuring the bride and groom’s names and the wedding date. We printed the seals on Ecru 8.5 x 11 inch full sheets and then trimmed the seals using a rotary trimmer. We then taped the seals to Mandarin Orange 3.5 x 2 inch custom cut cards, and stuck the pair to the Pocket Folder’s flap. We added coordinating Custom Image StationeryStamps using Ivory sheets to the Ecru A8 envelope.

Stay with the group
If you are using several floating objects to create your design, PrintingPress Extreme 5.0 allows you to group the objects together into a single object to make it easier to work with the completed design. In our example we used several shape objects to create a peace symbol. First you need to select all the floating objects that make up the peace symbol. The collection of selected shapes is shown below.

Ungrouped Objects

Next you need to click on the Group button in the Align palette in the Design palette group. The Group button is only enabled if two or more floating objects are selected. The grouped objects are shown below.

Grouped Objects

Now that the objects are grouped, they can be moved as a single object by dragging them anywhere on the card or by using the alignment tools. You can also resize the objects proportionally by holding down the Shift key on your keyboard while dragging the handles on the object with your mouse.
