Feeling Flush
Is there a better way to get good friends together on a Saturday night than breaking out the cards and poker chips? We don’t think so. And with this winning hand of invitations, menu cards and place cards, we’re not bluffing.

Besides being the hottest game these days, poker is a great theme for a party because there are so many ways to carry it out. Our first move was to make the invitations look like actual playing cards. In addition to the striking ace of hearts designs, we added little details like a pattern to the back of the cards and used a corner punch to round the corners.

Next, we made a menu of sandwiches – you’ll want to serve something easy to eat with one hand! – with poker lingo names. Platinum users can add the ace of hearts design to place cards. This way you can arrange all your players the way you’d like them.

The Platinum project uses a white 5x7 card paired with a deep red A7 envelope, white menu cards and place cards. For the design on the back, we used a blue and green harlequin pattern from the Fonts and Graphics 2 collection.

The standard PrintingPress designs prove poker is not just for boys. We used a pink and brown palette on a white 4.5 x 6.25 card and paired it with a rich brown A6 envelope. We used the pink and brown argyle pattern from the Fonts and Graphics 2 collection. The menu card was created on a white 4.25 x 5.5 card.

In Living Color
Create an instant pop-art invitation by
re-coloring and repeating a photo and interspersing blocks of color. This works especially well with a close up of the birthday boy or girl or even a school photo. Your invitation will be sure to stand out of the many other birthday party invitations busy parents get every month. Don’t be surprised if it stays up on your guests’ refrigerator way past the party! Why not? It is a work of art. Be sure to print an extra one to put in your scrapbook with photos from the party.

The project uses a white 4.5 x 6.25 card and a purple A6 envelope. The blocks of color were imported from the Fonts and Graphics 2 collection.

To recolor the photos, select each photo, and select Image, Recolor Image in the Design menu. Do this for each photo and adjust the hue and brightness so the photos coordinate with the color blocks.

To add text to each color block, create a text box for each one and set the color to off white. For more information on white text, see the April 2004 issue.

Sweet wishes
Don't get caught empty handed on February 13th. Add your own brand of love to the Valentines you send this year by making your own. In addition to Mountaincow’s images, you can find plenty of lovey-dovey ones – cupids, hearts, lips – on the Internet. And of course what matters most is the sweet love note you handwrite.

The PrintingPress project features a delicious Valentine bonbon on the top of a 3.5 x 5 card paired with a red 4 Bar envelope designed as an inner envelope. To print the “to” and “from” on the front, write it out in the inner envelope label field in your address book.

The Platinum project shows a sweetheart cookie on a folded white 5.5 x 8.5 card and a pink A2 envelope. For the “to” and “from” to appear on the envelope, create an inner envelope and add a text box in the same text style to read “To” and leave space for the names from your mailing list, and then add “From” with your name.

Love Fest
Who says Valentine’s Day is just for parties of two? Instead, use it as an excuse to invite friends – both couples and single folks – over for a party. Personalize your party by making it all desserts – all chocolate even! – or serving romantic food like Champagne, strawberries with whipped cream, oysters and caviar. If you’ve got a lot of single friends, ask everyone to bring a single friend of the opposite sex. Have an ice breaker or lots of conversation hearts on hand to help your guests mingle.

For the invitations, set the mood by starting with the luscious Cranberry stationery from Mountaincow’s Modern line. Its two-tone red paper and envelope are the perfect rich tones for a Valentine party. The bold burgundy lips and modern Beckles font promise a fun and decadent evening.

Platinum users can use a sweet bow border for a romantic style invitation. We used a white 4.5 x 6.25 card and a red A6 envelope. The red text uses the Isabelle font from the Fonts and Graphics 2 collection.

How do I use the downloadable projects from the newsletter?
See a newsletter project you love and want to make it your own? Each project featured is available for you to download to your computer so you can import it into PrintingPress and customize it with your own information.

First, click on the appropriate link for your version of PrintingPress. Platinum users can easily import both projects, but standard PrintingPress users won’t get the full project if they import a Platinum project. A window will appear offering to open or save the file for you. Choose “Save” and save it to your My Documents folder.

Open PrintingPress and choose Import Project from the File menu. In the Open window, select the project from where you saved it in your My Documents folder. Once the project has been imported, you can use it as a template and make the appropriate changes to the text and images to make it your own.

Please keep in mind, if the project uses a font from Fonts and Graphics 2 and you do not have Fonts and Graphics 2 installed on your computer, the text will use a default font such as Arial. You will probably have to choose another font to achieve the desired design.

The new graphics you see in the newsletter projects are teasers of what will be included in our upcoming collections of Fonts & Graphics. You can use these graphics in other projects by downloading the project, selecting the graphic and choosing Copy in the Edit menu. Then open a new project and choose Paste to insert the graphic into a new project. Stay tuned to Mountaincow Monthly to find out when new Fonts & Graphics collections become available.
